The best known alternate construction method for a wood kayak is Stitch and Glue. These boats are constructed from plywood sheets that are temporarily stitched together with copper wire. The joints are wrapped in epoxy / glass and the wire is removed. This creates a strong lightweight craft. The big advantage of this construction method is that a boat can be built in 40 to 50 hours. There are some very nice kits available that utilize beautiful exotic plywoods. The strip building method utilized by Blue Otter Kayaks allows for greater complexity in the hull shapes and the unique look of a strip built boat.
